The rigors of XC race and enduro trail riding helped in the development of the body shape, which rather than sitting within the SPD system, wraps around and encases the mechanism. When inevitable rock or ground contact occurs, that body protects the engagement system, helping prevent system failure and alleviating stresses that would check unimpeded engagement. Bearings and spindle are similarly overbuilt for durability, with a CNC machined hollow CR-Mo steel axle set in with sealed bushings and bearings.
